I have messed the last year with a little journal, drawing and adding some color. I decided to take a class in mid November. Now I'm hearing the words "the Story" again and again in the painting world. I hear "the story" in reenactment, in NAI, in church, but painting? I remember when I took some art classes eons ago the important word when creating a painting was composition, now it's"the story". A painting should draw your eye in, wonder around and tell a story. It seems composition and the story are almost interchangeable. Do a search on YouTube for painting compositions and you'll see what I mean. So here are some paintings that tell "stories". Love this stuff!!

As I wrote the above title it reminds me of postings on eBay, "Victorian, Wedding, Goth, Steam, pin up look alike" they cover every angle to get you to "look". However bare with me and see how this bonnet works for both. Originally I made the bonnet to go with an early 1860's gown
Now for the Regency look. I did not like the bonnet I had to go with my Regency gown. I was bemoaning the fact to my daughter. I had the above bonnet out on the table. I liked the way it went with my down & dirty brown Spencer I had made using American Duchess tutorial but wrong, wrong, wrong time period. My daughter picked it up and plopped it down on my head like a muffin cap, tied the ties in back, tucked the tails up in the bonnet and voila a Regency bonnet.

The Regency Gown

The gown was made several years ago. I used several gowns as reference to get the V neck however I did get the neck a little wide so I fill it in with a kerchief. Although I've noticed on several fashion plates they seem to bare a little more than I am comfortable doing. I choose the V neck over the typical Regency rounded neck, puffed sleeve look. I feel I'm too old for puffed sleeves and wanted a neck a little more flattering to me.

This past October I went back "home", home being the renaissance guild of The House of Swindon. It's been a long time since I have been able to play, however "play" is a misnomer as we are a histoic guild and expected to work. We are the household of the Rutland family, living in Queen Elizabeth I's time period. The Dowager Duchess of Rutland, Bridget Manners, is on the prowl for a new husband and the newly widowed Francis Russell, Earl of Bedford is enticing.

If you want to hone your skills to work with the public find a good historic guild and learn how to gig or improv. Work with the others in the guild and build your character as the public watches and asks questions. There are guilds out there who mostly "play" and then there are guilds that base their characters on history. Do your research on each guild, interview them, go and see how they work together in the guild yard in front of the pavilion and in back where the public is not allowed, go tho their meetings. Find one that fits you, join, have fun and learn history!
They asked me to model, I asked what to wear, they said "whatever". Now the interpreter in me was telling me the history of the really cool neon signs for Reno, Nevada would be from the 1930's-60's. Now I've been tagged before as Mamie Eisenhower. Yep this is the hairdo and clothing style of that period. I chose this dress to fit into the time period of the neon signs.
She wanted a unique gift for her sister's birthday. Maybe it's me being nostalgic as I turn the years over, but it seems several people my age and the age of my daughter long for the good old days. There is resurgence in knitting, crocheting, planting gardens, canning and having "comfort clothing" in our life. By comfort clothing I'm talking about a phenomena that is similar to the cliche "comfort food", we are all familar with that phrase. But "comfort clothing" is that connection to the past and several sites, pattern companies and craft companies have aprons such as our grandmothers wore.
I love it when I put on this type of apron. I wipe my wet hands on the apron, not jeans, I stuff pins and pens, rubber bands from the paper, penny off the floor into the apron pocket, not jeans. I feel this pull to past memories of my mom and grandmother doing the same type of activities, I'm at peace, my life is full, I'm wearing jeans, tee-shirt, flip-flops, and an apron. As long as I don't have the housedress with my hose rolled down around my ankles like grandma I'm a housewife fashionista.Lady Carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04523556570912592956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6281201820481185529.post-12057759575001121692012-10-24T08:17:00.000-07:002012-10-24T08:17:40.110-07:00Little More on Travels and Sewing FindsBack on hubby's computer to pull off a couple of pictures of the cruise. I did download pictures on to the computer as we went along the trip. Unfortunately I dropped the camera, trying to get it out of my cute little purse that matched my ensemble for dinner. Note to self, DO NOT try and handle camera with gloves on. This was an expensive trip for equipment: computer crashes before leaving, left my Kindle on plane, drop camera and break it.

But while in Portugal walking down a back twisty, curvy street I came upon a small fabric and trim shop. In the window they had a set up for bobbin lace. Large language barrier, I speak no Portuguese and they spoke little English, but apparently in Portugal the practice of bobbin lace is still being done on this colorful bobbin pillow. This art form made me think of Jo Graden in the states who makes beautiful bobbin lace.
Also added another night that Cody and I dressed for dinner. This is a fun opportunity to dress. Dinner is an Event on a cruise ship. It seems in our society today if we go out to dinner, the mode of dress is jeans, maybe dressier pants, cute top and jacket, but certainly no dresses or tie and hat for men.

When we returned to Southampton, England, we traveled up to Bath for the afternoon and met Lyze Lynch and her mother, Donna, for tea. The Jane Austen Festival was concluding that weekend. Unfortunately we not able to attend the other festivities but was able to absorb the flavor of Bath and the Jane Austen House.
Right before leaving on cruise, 36 hours to be precise my computer crashed. It would open files but Windows Office was gone, so no PowerPoint. Guess what I need on cruise to run presentations, yep you got it PowerPoint. My files were saved on flash drives and the big computer in the sky. Thank goodness I could use hubby's bigger bulky laptop, no complaining though, I had a computer to take with me! Then after I'm home a couple of weeks I get my computer back and the power cord is not charging unless I push it in reallllllly hard. Bless the invention of duck tape!!! A couple of comments on the cruise. We left Southampton, traveled to France, Spain, Portugal, back to Southampton. We then spent a few days in England. What I enjoy the most and others who travel with me is the depth of history in Europe. I mean a lowly Wool House in Southampton is older than the discovery of the Americas. In the Reno area our oldest building is from the mid-1800's. But that Wool house or English wool had such an impact on fashion, costuming and history, all things near and dear to my heart!! To the interpreters of history, what a Story, the impact of sheep on fashion! One of my presentations was "Textiles and Fashionistas through History, Broad Edification of Portraits, 900-1800's" This Wool House went so well with my presentation I put it into the presentation.
Not only did we have fun, but the other passengers seemed to enjoy our clothing as well. Of course Lauren is about 35yrs younger, that may have had something to do with everyone's enjoyment, she was beautiful and classy. We enjoyed ourselves so much I'm doing the same thing this cruise, but this time I've got a 22 yr old male (son) with me dressing in costume.

Dressing in Vintage takes less room and weight in the suitcase. I loved going to Costume College, in LA the first weekend in August. Wonderful costumes from historically accurate to fantasy. But as historically accurate as some of the costumes were we cannot be 100% accurate. Our own experiences will color our interpretation of the past. As a Certified Interpretive Guide I find those outside of NAI like Jennifer Rosbrugh, who wrote a article on this subject refreshing. Her article in Historical Sewing hits the proverbial nail on the head.

If someone could be praised as being historically correct in her patterns, color choices, sewing techniques it would be Jennifer. But even she is realistic regarding her "100 %" accuracy. I appreciate her honesty.
I have three presentations on this cruise. One of the presentations I thought the passengers might enjoy is the journals of Ellen Coolidge. She was the granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson. Most of her growing up years was living at Monticello, she and her siblings were partly schooled by Thomas Jefferson.

I thought the passengers would enjoy seeing London through her eyes, a new monarch, British culture, the architecture and meeting the Lions of the day. She writes in a witty, humorous and sometimes catty style. Wonder if her writing style is a result of Thomas Jefferson?

But, alas, I have no 1838 costume. Nor do I have anything remotely near an 1838 costume I could tweak. So back from Costume College last Monday, Tuesday down to the Dungeon and chain myself to the sewing machine. Here is the result of the past week.
Sure it's an awesome opportunity to attend top quality classes, learn great tips, gold nuggets of information on how to do it better, faster and neater. BUT it's COSTUME College and what better place to wear and see some of the most fantastic ensembles.

Eight of us from Nevada went to LA for Costume College. For Gala on Saturday night we all decided to wear Nevada colors, silver and blue plus carry a little Nevada Flag. Here are a couple of pictures from the Gala where we walked down the red carpet,
A few months ago I received this from a friend. Not sure what the maker intended it to be. They never finished it, but they had put in several hours of work. It still a few places where there is no decorative stitches. They never got around to finishing the edge or sleeve edge. It looks like some of the materials may be from the 1940's or 1930's. Any thoughts appreciated on this item.

I'm thinking about putting a binding around the edge and put a 1950's slip under it and wear it to Sunday Undies at Costume College as a robe. It is cute on, it is form fitting through the waist then flares out.

I wonder if several years down the road someone will find an unfinished project of mine and wonder "what the heck did she have in mind for this"
I was looking through my files for some pictures of Louise Mackay's home in England for a presentation tomorrow and ran across these pictures of Chatsworth. They had clothing on display from movies when we visited there. For the life of me I can't remember which movie! Thought you might enjoy seeing them.

In June I had the opportunity to participate in the event called Nada Dada Motel. Artist from around the city rented rooms from three hotels to display their art, June 14-17. I worked with three other artists and for a lack of a better word we termed ourselves, costume artists. We, Killbuck, Mary Crawley, and Geoffrey Nelson joined our different creative abilities together and created a space that was a smash hit. Killbuck and Mary was mostly Steampunk, Geoffrey mostly burning man and I, historical.

This was interpretation on a whole new level for me, but this is interpretation at the core of costuming, personification, transformation.

I so agree with what Killbuck wrote about our theme that I copied it here from Room of Costume
All this took one suitcase, one footlocker and one carry on.

First rattle out of the box we ran into an issue getting Lauren on the ship. Thank goodness my Boarding Letter was correct, but the ship's manifest had her as .....
Now the problem, I needed to make another bonnet for a Regency gown for the next cruise. I have a bonnet I like that goes with the Regency gown that I made several years ago, however it is much larger, takes up more room in my trunk and I needed something smaller, something easier to pack but I was fast running out of time. Maridy my daughter was here, and I had the bonnet with the Regency gown and the cheater Spencer. The cheater Spencer is via American Duchess. Lauren is going with me on this cruise and I thought a Spencer with this bonnet would be great color scheme, however wrong time period for bonnet. I was hemming and hawing, do I make another bonnet? when? I kept thinking no will know on the cruise that it is not exactly the right bonnet - but I would know and that just bothers me. I'm sorta a stickler for the right silhouette. Then my daughter took the 1850's bonnet and plopped down on my head, put the ties in the back and Voila - Regency! Thanks Mar!

We will be honoring those aboard the Titanic who lost their lives. In some parts of the country this Saturday - Sunday is called a 100yr celebration of the Titanic. It's hard for me to call it a celebration, but honor seems the more appropriate word. Lord Mayor of Belfast (where the Titanic was built) said, "The Titanic story is probably one of the most fascinating, amazing, poignant, thought-provoking and absorbing tales from the last century, if not the last millennium"

It seems there will be around 25 joining us for tea. Getting excited to share a cup of tea, laughter and seeing some old friends and meet some new friends.
I had a wonderful opportunity to model at the Nevada Museum of Art. I love doing the whole interpretative "look". To me it is not just the costume and then setting or standing pretty, it's about the whole picture. I had two props, a parasol or a deck of period cards. I went with the cards. It would be very appropriate for a Lady of this time period to be enjoying a game of cards in the later 1700's.

It is always a pleasure to receive a call from Barbara Clark or Jackie Frady at the Museum to be involved in one of their programs. Because of their level of interpretation it's easy to understand why they are rated number FIVE in the nation for auto museums and number sixteen in the world.

Interpreting information on the 1920's was "absolutely the berries", especially since I asked Lauren Reeser from American Duchess to co-host this event. I knew Lauren has a few 20's fashions and I have a few, put those together and we had a presentation, The Bee's Knees and the Cat's Meow, Fashionistas 1920's Style. Along with the presentation on Thursday we went back on Saturday for a skit - total improv- of camping in Yosemite in 1927.
In March I was asked to speak at the American Sewing Guild here in Reno. They specifically wanted to know how a costumer creates a costume. So I took the power point, a tub of "stuff" a couple of costumes and my latest project down and shared information. Fantastic group, young to well very mature ladies. Projects are anything to do with sewing. One lady is working on a Titanic using patterns from Vintage Pattern Lending Library - I'm hoping and she's hoping to join us for our Titanic Tea on the 14th. The next day I received this lovely email from Claire Blurton

Carolyn: I spoke to you at the ASG meeting about some egret feathers I have that my mother brought back from France in 1918 when she came to America with the US Army Nurses after WWI . I found them and a couple of other items you might be able to use in your historical costumes that you teach history with. Please contact me so you can come to see if they would be of any use to you. Claire
My fingers flew in writing a response back to her. Along with the feathers she gave me beautiful netted scarf from her mother and a lamb collar. I was also fortunate to get a picture of Claire's mother, Florence B Myers in her nurse uniform. I'm thinking of using these feathers on a Regency Turban on the next cruise in May.Lady Carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04523556570912592956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6281201820481185529.post-23024744165456717242012-04-01T16:10:00.000-07:002012-04-01T16:10:05.988-07:00BTS - that means Blue Thong Society

What a hoot! I was invited to speak to the Blue Thong Society - Mountain Divas earlier this month. This group met at the Lake Mansion, appetizers, dinner, desert and plenty of wine. This group is a slightly younger version of the Red Hat Society. If looking for a group energetic women and a good time contact:
I was doing research on another subject and ran across there two ads in a 1908 Sear & Roebuck Catalogue. I had to chuckle at the descriptions "confining the bust with no pressure to its proper place" and "holding the flesh and and shoulder blades in place" and this is worn on top of the corset!
